“For the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

“Did you see me do it?”

My Dad would tell the story often.  He was a boy, playing in the front yard when his ball rolled across the street.  He knew that he was not supposed to cross the street.  He had been reminded many times of this expectation by his mother, who was not known for making exceptions to previous instructions.  His desire to continue playing overrode his better judgment, and he crossed the street to retrieve the ball.  He reentered the yard without incident, and continued to play until he was called in for dinner.

“Jimmy, did you cross the street this afternoon?”

Considering his options, he asked the question, “Did you see me do it?”

“Yes.”

“Then, yes.  I did.”

My dad knew he had done something wrong, he knew his mother had been watching, so therefore, he knew that there was no sense in lying about it.  The point of this story is not to create the image of God, standing behind the curtain wanting to catch us in the act of doing something wrong. God sees us, He loves us, and He wants what is best for us.  His desires for us are for obedience, for our good and His glory.
